Luxury hotel members of the Great Hotels of the World were honored with multiple awards at the World Travel Awards 2009. A total of 23 awards were won by 16 Great Hotels of the World member hotels at this year’s World Travel Awards in London.

Often described as the Oscars of the travel industry, the awards acknowledge excellence in the world travel and tourism industry. Aiming to separate the good from the outstanding, and identify companies that consistently exceed customer expectations, the awards are voted for by thousands of travel professionals from 183,000 travel agencies, tour and transport companies and tourism organisations in over 160 countries. Now celebrating their 16th year, the awards are regarded as the very highest achievement a travel product can hope to receive.

Great Hotels of the World member hotels were awarded with the following World Travel Awards:

The Mandala Spa in Boracay Island was named the Philippines’ Leading Resort. This romantic spa and villas is a idyllic sanctuary on the Philippines’ exquisite tropical island paradise. Another award-winner in Southern Asia was Sri Lanka’s Leading Spa Resort at the Ayurveda Pavilions in Negombo.

The House at St. James was named Barbados’ Leading Boutique Hotel, while Cancun’s Hacienda Tres Rios took top prize as Mexico’s leading all-inclusive resort.

Among the hot spots in Europe, the Moevenpick in Istanbul was named Europe’s Leading Business Hotel, while Antalya’s Mardan Palace was awarded Europe’s Leading Luxury Resort, World’s Leading Luxury Resort and the World’s Leading Palace Resort. Sardinia’s Forte Village took home top Resort accolades for Europe’s Leading Family Resort, Europe’s Leading Resort, Italy’s leading Resort, Italy’s Leading Spa Resort and the World’s Leading Resort.

Elsewhere in the Mediterranean, Coral Beach on Paphos was named Cyprus’ Leading Resort and Elysium on Paphos was named the Leading Spa Resort in Cyprus. The Mediterranean’s Leading Beach Resort was Aldemar Olympian villa in Ilia, Greece, as Londa in Limassol, Cyprus was named the Mediterranean’s Leading Boutique Hotel.
