Colorado – The Ski Paradise of the United States

Last updated on

Once you’ve climbed the boards in the Rocky Mountains, you will not recover so quickly: The “back bowls”, the “cat skiing” and the ubiquitous deep snow will make you addicted and never want to ski anywhere else. The high altitude turns the North American winter destinations into a completely different ski world than we know from the European Alps. But not only that, the snow has an excellent quality thanks to the cold temperatures, low humidity in the air and chalky dust. Snow safety is guaranteed from mid-November to the end of April offering soft and powdery snow which is excellent for skiing. Besides, Colorado has more than 300 days of sunshine per year which makes the winter sport experience even more fun. Paradizo has been offering luxury chalets in Colorado for many years and we thought to introduce you the most beautiful ski resorts of that wonderful area, so you can see which one suits you the best.

Spacious, perfectly groomed slopes, fantastic forest runs and great bowls, that is Aspen. It stands for two things: fantastic skiing pleasure and international prominence. Being of the most famous ski resorts in North America, the place has a vibrant cultural scene, a huge selection of restaurants and bars, as well as more than 200 shops and galleries. Best snow conditions are guaranteed thanks to its high altitude up to 3,813 m. There is a total of four first-class ski areas with fantastic downhill possibilities. Aspen Mountain is famous for its forest runs. Overall, you will find rather steep slopes and variants here. Buttermilk is the number one for snowboarder. As the venue for the X Games, the area offers the corresponding terrain park. Otherwise Buttermilk is very suitable for beginners and supporters of the carving, as the slopes here are wide and rather flat. Aspen’s largest ski resort is Snowmass. It offers beginners as well as experts an inexhaustible selection of magnificent “runs”. The fourth area – Aspen Highlands – is also wonderfully varied. The absolute highlight here is the “Highland Bowl”, a huge, unprepared and controlled by the mountain rescue steep slope. Aspen offers a great variety of restaurants, shopping and charm. It has a great nightlife and après-ski scene.

Vail is undoubtedly one of the most famous ski resorts in the world and the main reason for this is certainly its size. Vail has something for every level, the front of the mountain is ideal for beginners and advanced. The Back Bowls and the Blue-Sky Basin, on the other hand, offer a backcountry adventure for ambitious and experienced riders. Vail offers top-notch service, world-class snow and weather conditions, as well as the finest in deep snow, cruising and humpback slopes. Predominantly treeless and rock-free terrain that is unique in the USA. Vail has been voted to the best ski resort in North America 15 times. For snowboarders Vail offers four modern terrain parks and a super pipe. But not only the perfect winter sport condition invites you to come here, look forward to après ski of a different kind. In Beaver Creek, where the rich and famous come and go, you can stroll on heated walkways and eat well. Although, you won’t find excessive drinking and typical après-ski music in vain, but it gives you the opportunity to celebrate with well-known stars in a dignified atmosphere.

Telluride offers some of the best and most scenic ski mountains in North America. It is still an insider tips because it is not as accessible as Aspen or Vail. It takes less than two hours to drive from Montrose Airport through narrow canyons and breathtaking mountain passes, which are a challenge in the snow and ice. Telluride is not as tall as Vail and not as glamorous as Aspen, but it is one of the best ski resorts in Colorado. Because Telluride is not so crowded and offers everything: an authentic place with history, a first-class ski area, dramatic peaks like in the Alps and this unique American scenic width.  Where Highway 145 ends, paradise begins for skiers. Deep in southwest Colorado, 4000-meter-high mountain massifs block the way. Just behind Telluride, jagged peaks rise in the San Miguel Valley, snowflakes clinging to their flanks, transforming the landscape into a winter wonderland. Once it’s snowed again in Telluride, you’ll also find untracked slopes in the huge ski area. For advanced skiers, countless jet-black runs and endless opportunities await you in the Black Iron Bowl. If you prefer a more leisurely pace, make a few laps in the Revelation Bowl at the back of the mountain and then return to the “Alpino Vino Hut”. Visit the sundeck where the high society drinks champagne and fine wines. Telluride is a modern ski resort and yet an original and authentic small town, which is very rare in the USA.
