Get a Taste of Barcelona, City of Chocolate with Context Tours

Last updated on

Context, organizer of critically acclaimed walking tours, expands its culinary program in Barcelona, with a new culinary tour designed and led by food journalists and historians.

City of Chocolate looks at the integral role Barcelona has played in the history of chocolate. Beginning at the port, the walk travels back to the 15th century with the arrival of the first chocolate beans to Europe from the New World aboard Columbus’ fleet. The walk explores how the cacao bean made its way into everyday life, by taking visitors into some of Barcelona’s more traditional cafes and granjas, where they will experience the traditional merinda. Moving on to some of the city’s latest chocolate-makers, participants will also experience some of the bold flavors of new chocolate mixes and current trends in bean-to-bar single-source chocolate makers like Cacao Sampaka. The discussion, led by food journalists and historians will involve aspects of cuisine, from technical production to cultural significance to final product, as well as tastings.

“Barcelona has had a 500 year love affair with chocolate,” says Paul Bennett, co-founder of Context Travel “It’s a deep part of history here, and has had a wider impact on the culinary scene, underscored by the recent fame of such restaurants as El Bulli and El Celler de Can Roca.”

Founded by National Geographic writer Paul Bennett and graphic designer Lani Bevacqua, Context is a network of English-speaking scholars and professionals, including art historians, writers, architects and gastronomes, who organize and lead walking seminars in fifteen world cities, including Florence, Rome, Venice, Naples, Paris, London, Madrid, Barcelona, Berlin, New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, D.C., Istanbul, and Athens. A certified B Corporation, Context Travel was named one of the fastest growing American companies in 2011 by Inc Magazine. Travel + Leisure has named Context one of the top European tour companies for its innovative approach to travel and the depth of its programs.
