Tenerife – The Top 5 things to do

Last updated on

The sunny island of Tenerife, also known as the Island of Eternal Spring, has been attracting numerous holidaymakers for many years with its mild climate, beautiful beaches and great nightlife. But if you look more closely at the island, you will soon realize that it has much more to offer, like impressive mountains and wildlife, history and culture, festivals and much more. In almost all descriptions about Tenerife one word appears: diversity! On the island there are many climatic zones, different landscapes, numerous cultural influences and of course countless sights. From the sheer offer you do not know where to start! But don’t worry, that’s why Paradizo created this list for you of the top 5 things to do in Tenerife, so you know which places you cannot miss during your stay on Tenerife.

1. Parque Nacional del Teide – Like on another planet

In the largest national park in the Canaries, hikers feel like they are on the moon. The best view offers the volcano summit at 3718 meters altitude. If the climb is too strenuous, you can also enjoy the distant view of the neighboring islands from the mountain station of the cable car at 3555 meters. Between the black and red rocks of the volcano crater grow little violet flowers that are called “Las Cañadas”.

2. The penisula Punta de Teno – Snorkeling with a distant view

The bumpy road TF-445 from Buenavista del Norte heading west leads to the barren peninsula of Punta de Teno. A lighthouse marks the westernmost point of Tenerife, a beautiful place for those who want to enjoy the fresh sea air away from the tourist crowds. Here visitors can relax on the bay and enjoy a wonderful view of La Gomera, La Palma and the Teno Mountains. The rocky bay is suitable for snorkeling, because you can find colorful fish in the shallow water. Behind the cliff there is a small ladder in the rock from where brave people jump into the open sea.

3. Los Gigantes – Colossal cliffs on the coast

The rocky coast of the giants (Acantilados de los Gigantes) falls vertically in the west of the island. The cliffs rise with a height of 500 to 800 meters from the sea. Boat trips start several times a day from the coastal resorts of Los Gigantes or Los Cristianos. During the tour dolphins jump out of the water next to the boat. If you’re lucky, you even see a whale. A day trip to the area is also great for exploring the countryside kayaking or paddling.

4. The Anaga Mountains – Hike through the forest

Formed 7 to 9 million years ago by volcanic activity, the prehistoric mountain range is the oldest part of the island and exudes a very special, unique charm. At the viewpoint Mirador Cruz del Carmen begins the ten-kilometer hike to Punta del Hidalgo in the north of the island. The path leads through the dense laurel forest of the Anaga Mountains past the mountain village of Carboneras to Chinamada. The few inhabitants still live here today in cave houses. After four hours you reach the coastal town of Punta del Hidalgo. If you want, you can refresh yourself in the volcanic bath before getting on the bus to La Laguna.

5. Playa de Benijo – Natural beach in the north

Surrounded by rocks, Playa de Benijo, with its black sand and gigantic waves, is only accessible via a winding mountain road from Santa Cruz that leads through the laurel forest of the Anaga Mountains to the north coast. The secluded nudist beach offers a magnificent view of the Roques de Anaga. Here, visitors can experience Tenerife as authentically as the locals. The wooded rock landscape in the north of the island probably contains the most beautiful natural beach in Tenerife. Behind the small fish restaurant El Mirador in Benijo, a stone staircase leads down to the sandy beach.
