Top 5 Ski Resorts in France

Last updated on

The ski resorts in France are known for their huge size and are equally popular. Hundreds of kilometers of slopes, snow conditions that are almost always optimal, and thanks to the southern location, skiers can look forward to a lot of sun during winter holidays. Even the ski resorts in France have a very local character. Romantic farming villages like in Austria or Switzerland with rustic huts are rarely found in France, but most skiers spend the night in larger and more modern chalets. The advantage is that most of the accommodations in the ski resorts in France are right on the slopes. In short, skiing in the French Alps is modern, big and typically French. Paradizo has been renting out luxury chalets in France for many years and we thought it would be nice to introduce you the 5 best ones.

1. Courchevel

Courchevel is the most famous place of the three valleys, Les Trois Vallées, which is the largest ski area in the world with 600 kilometers of slopes. Courchevel was founded in 1946 and covers approximately 150 kilometers of slopes. In Courchevel are almost as many luxury boutiques as on the Champs Elysées. And you do not necessarily have to be a millionaire to enjoy holidays here, but prices are higher than elsewhere. Courchevel is often referred to as St. Tropez of winter sports. The highest part of Courchevel 1850 is characterized by a high exclusivity and attracts many celebrities such as Robbie Williams, George Clooney or Prince William and Kate Middleton. Of course, this is reflected in the prices for the accommodations.

2. Méribel

Located in the midst of the Trois Vallées ski resort, Méribel is the ideal location to access the largest ski area in the world. Méribel is suitable for skiers of all levels. If you prefer a more leisurely pace, you will love the peaks of Mont Vallon, sporting riders can let off steam on La Face, fans of winding descents prefer La combe du Vallon, families will find it perfect in Chouca. Méribel itself is a picturesque village set on a hill with wooden alpine buildings. A largely English-speaking resort, Méribel lacks a little French authenticity but offers a friendly atmosphere and a good few pubs for some great après-ski. In the ski resort of Méribel, children and adults can progress in safety and tranquility, everything is designed so that families get an unforgettable ski holiday.

3. Val Thorens

This ski resort combines the best quality skiing fun with atmosphere. At 2,300 m altitude lies the ski resort of Val Thorens, making it the highest ski resort in Europe. Its high-altitude guarantees snow all season and retains good conditions throughout the whole winter. Thanks to its southern inner alpine location, it also has a lot of sunshine. The valley stations around Val Thorens run from November to May. This makes Val Thorens one of the few French ski resorts which open long before Christmas.  You can enjoy amazing views over the other side of the valley from one of the numerous glacier points in Val Thorens. As a purpose-built resort, some may say it lacks character in comparison to other resorts. But its definitely the place to be for all adrenaline junkies and those who are more advanced and more professional in ski.

4. Les Arcs

In the heart of the second largest connected ski area in the world, opposite the Mont Blanc, you can escape from everyday life. The ski resort Les Arcs offer more than 200 km of slopes on 128 slopes of all levels of difficulty. Advanced skiers enjoy one of the steepest slopes in the Alps and freestylers enjoy the snow park. Les Arcs consists of four villages which are connected by lifts and slopes. The villages were planned for tourism, that’s why they lack a bit local character. However, if you can do without it, you will find everything you need for a perfect ski holiday: Guaranteed snow thanks to its high altitude, slopes right up to the front door, fast and modern lifts and a wide range of slopes. Les Arcs presents itself very family-friendly thanks to its many child caring facilities. Away from the slopes, Les Arcs offers other great winter sports including cross-country ski trails, snow scooter rides, snowshoeing, horseback riding, slacklining and paragliding.
