And the award goes to…

The people have spoken. Condé Nast Traveller (www.cntraveller.com) has recently released the results of their eleventh annual Readers’ Travel Awards. With categories ranging from child friendly airlines to outstanding villa rentals, Condé Nast reveals the top countries, cities & countries, hotels, spas, islands and many more luxury destinations and travel companies for 2008.

The Six Senses Hideaway Samui on Thai island Koi Samui, aside from being the top-rated hotel in Asia and the Indian subcontinent, is also considered the “Best in the World” in all categories according to fantastic overall ratings. In fact, Thailand is home to five of the top ten best hotels on the Asia and the Indian subcontinent.

In Europe, La Residencia in Mallorca, Spain earned top ratings for ambiance and decor, making it the reader’s favorite. The San Domenico Palace Hotel in Sicily won for most outstanding location and Venice’s Hotel Cipriani towered over the competition for best leisure facilities.

Other hotel winners around the globe: nothing in Australia and the South Pacific could compare to the location and staff at the Bamurru Plains in Australia’s Northern Plains; travelers to Chile loved the Explora en Patagonia Hotel Salto Chico; and the Taj Mahal Palace & Tower in Mumbai led the list for top overseas business hotels.

Island hoppers chose the Indian Ocean Maldives as their preferred getaway, followed closely by the Greek Islands, Mauritius, Barbados and Seychelles. Other favorite island vacations include Bali, Phuket and Antigua, with Jamaica rounding out the top twenty islands in the world.

No stranger to tourism, Paris led the pack of favorite overseas cities to visit, with top ratings for food and restaurants as well as culture. New York slid into the number two slot, and is also considered the best value for your money, along with No. 10 Madrid. Sydney is perfect for an eco-luxury vacation with high marks in environmental friendliness, and Rome and Barcelona rounded out the top five overseas cities.

New Zealand is the Condé Nast traveller’s favorite country to visit, thanks to its stunning scenery, safety and value for money. India earned the second position, scoring high in the culture poll, though not as culturally replete as Italy, who scored the No. 3 spot. The famous Thai welcoming smile earned the Asian country the fourth position, followed closely by Brazil. France, South Africa, USA, Greece and Spain finished off the top ten countries to visit in the world.

Once you’ve arrived at the hot spots, readers felt Meon Villas provided the greatest villa rental accommodations and overall luxury villa experience. In a close second was CV Travel, which was earned outstanding ratings for its variety and range of luxury villas. Other top villa rental companies included Indigo Lodges, Holiday Rentals, Wimco and the Greek Islands Club, which was singled out for its “on-the-ground support.”
