Asia Transpacific Journeys created the list of the 10 most visited pilgrimage spots in Asia that includes the Emerald Buddha of Thailand and the Varanasi of India. First of all is Taktshang Monastery in Bhutan, which is considered to be the most sacred place in the country. This monastery is established on a cliffside that has a height of about 3,000 feet from the floor of the valley.
Next is the Varanasi in the country of India and this temple holds a certain purification ceremony in which all of the sins of a devotee will be forgiven by using the waters taken from Ganges. This is a yearly event that is supported by a large number of Hindus because they believe that they will be given a better life in their reincarnation were they to participate in this ritual.
Following this is Myanmar’s Shwedagon Pagoda for Buddhists, which is a 322-feet structure made of gold and on top of it is a 76-carat diamond. And, there is also the cave temple Dambulla based at Sri Lanka, which is listed in the World Heritage Sites of UNESCO. This has five different caves while its walls reach an area of 6,000 square feet.
Fifth on the list is Indonesia’s Borobudur, which is a highly-recommended site in Indonesia and this 9th century-remains is deemed as the largest memorial for Buddhists worldwide. Meanwhile, Pashipatinath of Nepal claims the sixth spot and this is the biggest shrine of Shiva in the whole world. This is greatly visited by devotees due to the captivating ritual of cremation that takes place in the Bagmati River.
The seventh is Pak Ou of Laos and this is a natural cave that contains as many as 3,000 Buddha statues. And, on the eight spot is India’s Dharamsala, the home of Dalai Lama and also the center of the banished government of Tibet.
Second to the last is Wat Phra Kaew or the “Temple of the Emerald Buddha” in Thailand, which is found in the Grand Palace of Bangkok. This is where the monarchs of Thailand pay their respects since it has been reclaimed from the Burmese during the eighteenth century. And, last but not the least is the Sarnath of India and it has been said that this was the first site where Buddha preached after his enlightenment.
