Madrid Private Walking Tour - Context Travel

Context, the urban walking tour specialist known for its scholar-led cultural tours, has expanded its programs to Madrid. Working with native Madrileño art historians from its Rome and Venice programs, Context has expanded its innovative walking seminars to Spain‘s capital, offering a variety of thematic private tours.

Madrid is a great city for us. Although it’s a major European political and cultural capital, few travelers outside of Europe really know it,” says Context director Paul Bennett. “We’ve spent the past six months working with our docents here to get this initial offering just right, and have put together a fantastic group of art, literary, and history walks, along with a good, basic introduction to the city.”

As with its programs elsewhere, Context will cap its group walks in Madrid at six participants, the lowest group size in the walking tour industry. Lasting three hours on average and led by Ph.D.-level scholars and specialists, Context’s city walks in Madrid are aimed at independent travelers who want to acquire a deeper understanding and appreciation for Madrid and its history.

Initial offerings include an overview walk of the Prado alongside a thematic walk on Goya in Madrid, led by a Spanish art historian, that looks at the political and artistic context that shaped one of the most important Spanish painters and visits a number of his works hidden in the churches of the city.

Context is also offering an orientation walk that covers the Puerta del Sol area of the city as well as a thematic exploration of the Huertas district that focuses on literary and artistic giants who’ve lived here over the centuries, including Lope de Vega and Cervantes. Titled Life in Dreams, Intellectual Madrid, the walk is being billed as a “thematic introduction” to the city for travelers looking for something different.

Context will be offering excursions, at first to Toledo and Alcalá de Henares, but eventually also including Seville, Cordoba, and El Escorial. A number of the docents in Context’s new Madrid tour program are qualified to work with children or have teaching experience; and thus, many of these walks will be modifiable for traveling families. Walks will be offered both privately on request and as regularly scheduled group walks. Tailor-made walks will cost between €270 and €330 for the group, while group walks will cost between €55 and €70 per person.
